Venice – St Mark’s Square/Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco

Napolean called the Piazza San Marco ‘the finest drawing room in Europe’ I agree its a great place to sit and schmooze, have a glass of wine and listen to great music.  I did just that at this great little restaurant below, and believe me it was worth every penny.

Pigeions in St Mark's Square

The pigeons are almost as famous as St Mark’s Square, its the most unbelievable site, these pigeons are not scared and really love to sit on everyone, if you stand there and put your arms out, in no time at all you look like a scarecrow.

Basilica di San Marco

The Basilica di San Marco is magnificent with byzantine domes of beautiful mosaic work.  Below you will see the incrediable detail in the mosaic work.  At certain times of the year the square may be flooded for several hours by high water ‘aqua alta’ .  This is a combination of high tide, low barometric pressure and winds blowing north up the adriatic sea.
