There is a definite move towards white crisp kitchens again, and rather the use of interesting shelving or bringing colour into the kitchen in other ways. Gone are the days of the dark wooden kitchens or even the lighter wood kitchens. Less granite it being used and more caesar stone, but I do see alot of black granite tops coming in and the contrast of the white and black tops is very effective. Also thick dark wooden tops.
Creating interest with a different selection of shelving or lovely big islands with setting areas is a must and the use of light in the kitchen is important, wether it be natural light or beautiful over head feature lighting. I like the idea of not making the kitchen perfect and all exactly the same, by introducing a different colour on the cupboards of the island or introducing colour into the chairs or stools used in the kitchen. Floating shelves or the use of freestanding dressers are extremely effective. More and more people are moving towards the old style gas stove, or a combination of gas and electric.
I have recently been involved in the renovation and decoration of a gorgeous little farmhouse, and was a part of the designing of the kitchen. Most kitchen are very open plan now days and very much a part of the living space. And the trick is to intrigate them with the living area.
